✅ Pass the Resolution
We did it!!!
Last night was a momentous occassion for Safe Structures PPS and the broader PPS community as the PPS board unanimously passed a resolution created in partnership with our community. This is a historic moment for the safety or Portland’s children.
This is truly a watershed moment in the years-long fight to protect our children from earthquake dangers.
At the meeting:
We delivered 421 petition signatures from our community, including parents from 43 different Portland schools.
Parents spoke passionately about protecting our children and in support of the resolution.
The Board voted unanimously to support our resolution and thanked us for our advocacy.
We celebrated a victory that some parents have worked toward for far too long.
Board Chair Eddie Wang said it plainly: "We are making a strong commitment here tonight to prioritize seismic upgrades as part of the 2025 bond."
Tonight's resolution represents the strongest commitment Portland Public Schools has made in many years to addressing seismic safety in our elementary and middle schools. The school board members said it themselves tonight: Collective advocacy by concerned parents like you made this happen!
But here's the thing: This victory only matters if Portland voters pass the school bond.
Without the money generated by the bond, the commitment is just words on a page. Ballots are in voters' hands right now, and we must do whatever we can ensure this bond passes to fund these critical safety improvements.
So, here's what's next:
Join our Zoom call TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY) NIGHT at 8:00pm. We'll give an update on where our efforts have gotten us and we'll hear about what comes next. We've invited the manager of the school bond campaign so we can get plugged in to their important efforts to pass the bond. Click here to RSVP and get the zoom link.
Write letters to the editor supporting the bond. We need to make sure everyone in our community knows how important this is, and an LTE is a great way to do it. Follow this link for key points and submission instructions.
Volunteer with the campaign. On tomorrow night's call, we'll hear about lots of additional ways to get loud in support of the bond. In the meantime, sign up here to volunteer with the Yes for Portland Schools campaign.
Tonight's commitment from the School Board marks an incredible victory. Thank you for everything you've done to get us this far. They passed the resolution...now let's all pass this bond!
